pirate ship

This weekend was nice and warm so on Saturday we decided to go for a walking tour of the "city" (that is what Londoners call the business district).

 

This is "The Monument", designed by Christopher Wren and built in the late 1600's to commemorate the great fire of 1666. 

This building is the Lloyds of London; the headquarters of Lloyds Bank.  The architect is from London (Richard Rogers), the building is inside out!  Awesome! 

 The Gherkin!  Actually called 20 St. Mary Axe, designed by Foster and Partners.  This is Carter's favourite building.

Pirate ship!  Actually is a full size, floating replica of a 1600's british naval ship, but the kids like it a lot more as a pirate ship.  It is the Golden Hinde.

 We couldn't find Jenn for a while and we found her with the olive lady.

 Carter was hanging out with the Turkish delight crowd.

 

Next we stopped by the Southward Cathedral.  For those that don't speak UK english, Southwark is pronounced suth-ic (go figure).  

 Carter likes the sarcophagus for John Gower. 

 William Shakespeare used to attend this parish when he lived in London.  This is only a monument to him, he isn't buried here.

 The outside of the church is clad with split flint rock which is native to the area.  Pretty cool looking up close.

 On Sunday we decided to check out a local cemetery, Brompton Cemetery.  It was really creepy and nothing like Toronto's Mount Pleasant Cemetary!

 

There are lots of family mausoleums.

 This looks cool, I wonder what is down there.

 On our way home we walked past the homes of some luckier people (bad joke).  On our way home we walked through one of the most wealthy neighbourhood in London.  We were hoping to see Madonna or Hugh Grant but no luck.
